Using PASS with Students in a One-on-One Context

Now that we have shown you the various aspects of Performance Assessment, let us go through the steps needed to put PASS into action in a one-on-one context. As you may recall, a one-on-one context assumes that you are working with a small number of students who are deemed to be academically at risk, usually based on their results from the first test of the semester.

Before getting started, take some time to map out your semester. We have included a sample Timeline, based on a 15-week semester.

Keep in mind that, for each test, you need time to:

  • set up the PASS Excel grid
  • analyze the student data
  • meet with your individual students

All this needs to be completed within a timeframe that allows students to implement their Action Plan before the next test. So be prepared for a busy couple of weeks!

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1 – Contact each student

Review our Guidelines, and contact each student in order to introduce PASS. We recommend contacting students via email to describe PASS and invite them to participate.

Step 2 – Choose the Complementary Assessment Tools

If you have chosen to use any of the Complementary Assessment Tools (Student Profile, Study Habits Checklist, Identifying Your Learning Style), you can attach them to the email and ask that the student return the completed form(s) to you by a specific date.

Step 3 – Review data from Student Performance Assessment Graphs (SPAG)

After the first test, apply what you learned in Using Excel to Help Your Students Excel to analyze your student’s SPAG. You may find it helpful to review the student’s completed test booklet and/or computerized answer sheet to gather additional data.

Step 4 – Review data from Complementary Assessment Tools

If you used any of the Complementary Assessment Tools, review the student’s completed form(s) according to the respective Guides to Interpreting the Data.

Now you are ready to start building each student’s Action Plan. Let us go to Building the Action Plan.
