Nursing students undergo two types of evaluations: theoretical and practical (clinical). The theoretical evaluation of student learning is mainly based on written tests. However, a number of students fail the theoretical evaluation while being successful in the practical evaluation, which suggests that they have the potential to become nurses, but need to work on their test-taking abilities.
PASS (Performance Assessment and Strategies for Success) is designed to help teachers provide test-taking strategies tailored to nursing students’ strengths and weaknesses. It combines quantitative data analysis of test results and qualitative data on students’ study habits, learning style, and other related dimensions to develop individual action plans aimed at improving academic proficiency.
Pedagogical objectives
PASS has the following objectives:
-
Adequately supporting students who are successful in the practical (clinical) evaluation of their course to help them succeed in their theoretical evaluation;
-
Helping nursing students acquire the study and test-taking skills they need to successfully complete their program and their professional licensing exam;
-
Providing teachers with a tool to create exams that are well structured, comprehensive and appropriately levelled.
Any student taking a written short-answer or multiple-choice type test should be able to improve their test-taking skills and their overall test marks with the help of PASS.
